This Contest is Terminally Awesome
I am a big fan of random adventures, contests, reality TV shows, and other miscellaneous life experiences.
Most people will probably think I'm crazy for this, but I think this gig sounds AWESOME!:
The Vancouver International Airport (airport code YVR) in British Columbia, Canada, is celebrating their 80th anniversary. To celebrate and commemorate, they're sponsoring a very unique and innovative Terminal-esque contest.
They want someone to live at the airport, living, breathing, sleeping, eating and shopping there - for 80 consecutive days.
80 days! Almost 3 months!!
Ok it's not quite like Tom Hanks in The Terminal because you're not going to have to figure out how to drape yourself across those awkward seats in the waiting lounge. In fact, they're putting you up in the Fairmont Vancouver Airport Hotel, which just this year won the honor of North America's best airport hotel. For food, you'll get to eat at the selection of 50+ food places at the terminal.
In addition to room and meals, the winner is given a camera and editing equipment and access to more airport people and places than you ever imagined. The idea is to tell the untold stories of the people and processes behind the scenes, and those who are the face of the Vancouver Airport.
You'll spend your time visiting the places like the chapel, working out at the gym at airport hotel, going ot the drugstore or the convenience store, the bookstore, all of the four spas.
You'll go use the services of the dentist, the doctor, hairdresser, florist, and more.
You're not allowed to leave the island where the airport is located for even a single day (obviously, emergencies get special allowances). But with trails for biking and walking, several parks, including one right at the terminal, there is plenty to do to go stretch your legs and get some fresh air, and visitors are allowed. There's even a pub to sit at where you can go sit with a beer and watch the float planes take-off and land.
They want you to tell the world about YVR and its services and facilities, its importance and its stories, and you shoot stories every day that will be updated to the web.
Each week you'd produce:
2 feature stories (with ideas and assistance from the staff)
3 stories that you find as they evolve
a video diary post
an interactive Twitter/Facebook video response to something the community wants to see
a blog post
and 6 Tweets/FB Page interactions.
It sounds like a lot but with all the possible stories in that environment with exclusive access and assistance, the possibilities would be infinite. What a bunch of fun someone could have doing this!!
Oh, and by the way...you also get $15,000 CAD to do it.
Sadly, only resident of British Columbia are eligible to enter the live@YVR contest, but just knowing there are sweet, crazy gigs and contests out there like this is really awesome and gets the imagination spinning.
Keep your ear to the ground and keep us posted if you hear of more interesting ones!
