Making Australia Day Great

One thing that still can put many Australians to shame is talking about our own national holiday. It does not need to be this way, though. Australia deserves to be proud of its uniqueness. Being so geographically isolated from the world as it is, Australia deserves a national holiday that brings its citizens together, a shared celebration that shows respect to one another, and an attitude of understanding and unity. Australia Day should be the perfect day to execute this peace offering to one another. January 26th should embrace and celebrate ALL cultures, not least the first one of the first peoples.

Tis the Season for Frivolous Drama

For the hipster in your life. Photo courtesy: http://beardbaubles.tictail.com/December is the month when a lack of sense seems to be an epidemic. In an age where beard baubles become a way to celebrate Christmas, it becomes glaringly obvious that Christmas needs to take a deep breath in, put the shopping bag away, and calm the hell down.

At first, I did not think that the tacky, commercialised mayhem was so bad here in Australia. There is no snow in Melbourne like in Finland, where Santa Claus is from. So what is Christmas in Australia really about?

Australia's Climate Change Immunity

When I first moved to Australia, I was expecting to see solar panels on every house. I expected my apartment building to use the sun as fuel. It made perfect sense. The sun is a cheap source of renewable energy. Exporting Australia’s coal reserves to other countries without much sun made sense, too. With many of the world’s pristine, untouched natural wonders, I assumed that people cared about the environment. At least more than Americans, surely!

Australia: Solving world obesity, one slice of Vegemite at a time

Arriving to Australia as an international student, I had been given much advice on a variety of “Aussieisms” and pieces of culture to keep in mind. However, I knew I had to immerse myself in Aussie culture in order to truly understand it. I wrote a list before I left. Mostly uncontroversial topics and vocabulary: reckon, TimTams, and thongs. Vegemite, however, was much debated about; either loved or hated. With my 30 kilo bag in-hand and high expectations, I departed Oslo for Melbourne.

A Night in the Life of a Feeling

“Right after you feel something for the first time, only then you realize you never felt it before”. That is how you get to know who I really am. All you thought before were just abstract concepts of me. Last night, for example, I had her. My biggest challenge to be precise and I did a great performance on her! It was midnight when I made my appearance. I began crawling from her stomach to her chest, tearing down walls of disbelief and logic. She kept trying to fight it, they all do at first, but I have the experience and I am one of the best in this field. I was prepared and logic was no match for me.

What's Changing?

I wrote the other day that something has changed in society; my own American society anyway, for sure. Have people always been this deranged? Are the people changing, or are the methods?
